Beyond the usual features, players have one-timers, fake shots, drop passes, and three checks at their fingertips - a strong lineup. Hull provides real player names, jersey colors, and city names, but team names fell out of the mix. Players then choose from 28 teams and skate toward the net in regular, season, shootout, or playoff two-player matches. Crank a powerful slap shot off the goalie, then pick up the bounce for an easy score.Pass frequently to create breakaways but make sure you have a clear lane, or it'll get intercepted.Before a game and at the end of each period, tune your team's attributes with the coaching feature to match game conditions.Scoring is easier when your opponent's net is at the bottom of the screen (you have a clearer view of the goal), so push hard on offense in those periods.But if you don't nail your man, use the poke check to jab for the puck with your stick. Your defense should revolve around body checks.Pro hockey is a fast game, and unfortunately, the speed and control required to simulate this sport effectively have been sacrificed here for the graphics. You can skate end to end without passing, and your defensive players never seem to be around when you need them. There isn't much hockey strategy required, either. The slow game play and slower control take the fun out of playing. The real problems with this game begin when you pick up the control pad. Thankfully, you have the option to shut off the sound. The puck noises seem genuine, but the play-by-play from ABC Sports announcer A1 Michaels is grainy. While the graphics are great, the sound effects are sparse. The players are crisply animated, and the rink shows depth. With a new 3/4-overhead view, the graphics are the most impressive feature in this great-looking game. You get various play modes, including exhibitions, playoffs, and seasons, along with team stats and an edit feature.
